The severity classes are based on the recurrence interval: (class 1) Large flood events: recurrence < 20 year; (class 2) Very large events: 20 year < recurrence < 100 year; (class 3) Extreme events: recurrence > 100 years.
This graph shows the importance of the class 1 floods. The percentage of class 2 and class 3 floods has been pretty constant since 1985 (for the years with reasonable data reliability). Nevertheless, between 1998 and 2001, this percentage was pretty high.
