The recurrence interval anecdotal corresponds to the statistical return period of an event of the same intensity (e.g. a 100 year recurrence interval flood has 1% chance to occur each year, which does not mean that it will occur every 100 years...). This information is not always available, furthermore in countries where there is no historical discharge measurement. This explains in part why the recurrence interval is proportionally higher in western countries (e.g. USA or Australia). The proportionally low recurrence interval in Asia might also be explained by the seasonal dimension of the floods on this area: if some events are exceptional, most of them are seasonal.
