The damage information is available for about a quarter of the floods recorded since 1985. For this quarter the evaluation cost is about 530 Billions of $ US. This amount comes mostly from few devastating floods: the worst flood cost was estimated at 210 Billions $ US (East coast of China in June 1998). The average of 1986 is affected by a very damaging flood (72 Billions of $ US in Alberta).
From a global perspective this graphic shows an increase of flood damage between 1985 and 1995. On the other hand, the flood damage seems to decrease since 1998.
