Floods killed 130,000 people since 1985. About 7,500 people are killed every year by floods. More than 40,000 people died during the 3 major events: 20,000 and 10,000 in 1999 - 11,000 in 1998. These major events explain the very high number of fatalities in 1999 and part of the ones in 1998. The number of fatalities decreased between 2000 and 2002, while the number of flood events increased. The evolution of fatalities seems to follow a curve with some peaks in 1988, 1993 and 1999. The 3 worst years in terms of fatalities were 1998, 1999 and 2000.
